Press Release: Bad Reception UK film premiere for charity.

PRESS RELEASE

Dunstable-born writer and stand-up comedian, Spike Breakwell, is to play host to the UK premiere of his first feature film “Bad Reception”.  reakwell, formerly one of Rory Bremner’s writers and star of BBC2’s disability show “From the Edge”, plays Ziggy Fontaine in the award winning horror movie.

The premiere will be raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support as a tribute to Kevin Robinson, the theatre director and friend of Breakwell who died of cancer in September. “He believed I could act right from the word go”, Breakwell explains. “And I guess, as I’m in a Hollywood movie he was right”.

Filming days in Hollywood are long as Breakwell remembers “We were shooting my scenes on the set in North Hollywood, I was on set, made up and ready to go and it was only eight am”, he says. “My character is supposed to be very bubbly and lively and described in the script as a self-styled “Stephen Hawking of Hollywood” not easy at that time in the morning.”

Director Mark Todd (Guvnor Films) remembers, “Spike knew that the set wasn’t friendly to his disability, but he was a real pro and told the crew jokes as they carried him and his wheelchair up two flights of stairs.”

As well as appearing in the movie, Breakwell took an executive role as a producer on the project. He jokes, “That’s how I got the film company to hold the UK premiere in Dunstable”, he explains. “Mark (Todd) lives in Birmingham. Who wants to spend a night in Solihull?”

The event will be held atThe Highwayman Hotel Saturday 24th November 8pm and as well as Breakwell, director Mark Todd and American lead actress Ashley Trevathan will also be attending. The screening is free to all-comers, but the producers ask for a voluntary donation to Macmillan Cancer Support.  It should be a great night for horror fans and devotees of independent cinema.

Bad Video Kills Your Brand

Is Bad Video Killing Your Brand?

Two years ago (2010), I was asked by a colleague whether he should bother to create a video for his company’s website.  At the time, there were rumours that Google was considering  ranking sites with video higher than those without, so I told him to get a camera, make something to show off his projects, and put it on the front page of his website.

In 2011, I worked with YouTube at VidCon in Los Angeles. The landscape had already changed, with a plethora of HD cameras available, video bloggers were now creating their own YouTube channels and getting out there. With minimal resources, they were creating 2-minute pieces of inventiveness, and Google had openly proclaimed that videos did indeed help websites achieve higher rankings.

So here we are, approaching the end of 2012 and wondering if the Mayans will be proved right. The reality is, whatever the outcome on 21st December, I can guarantee someone will film it, edit it, add titles and effects, then put it up on the web. Because that is what people expect now!

YouTube is now the second biggest search engine on the web. The accepted route for people researching products, services or companies is: look it up on Google, and then search for a video on YouTube. But here’s the kicker: the landscape has changed again, and the stakes are higher now. People’s expectations of what they see have risen.  If a 14 year old skateboarder is willing to spend £200 of his pocket money on an action camera that he can strap on to his helmet, so he can record an amazing amount of creative ways to break his bones, just to score an audience on YouTube…then you have to ask yourself, “Are we working hard enough to capture our target audience?”

Making a good video is not a major investment anymore, so when people see bad, uninventive company videos, they see the brand in a negative light. Believe me when I say Bad Video Kills!  The days of shaky, poorly lit and hard to hear videos are gone, and companies that continue to use them will suffer financially, as sure as MPs insult policemen.

It is a brave new Hi Definition world out there and those with vision will capture its treasures. So the next time you are struggling to stay awake during a marathon PowerPoint presentation or you find yourself squinting at a blurry product video, remember that limping skateboarder with 2 million fans.

Do people like to jump on moving trains?

A long time ago I worked with a guy, (let’s call him Dick) who despite knowing very little about the film business, taught me a lot about people. In the three years that Dick and I worked together (before he ‘did the dirty’ me), I learned a few valuable lessons about how people think. One of them was ‘people like moving trains’.

Now I’m a few years older myself, I’ve been lucky enough to experience some of the situations that Dick and I spoke about, as well as add a little of Mi Experience to the mix.

So do people like moving trains?

Well, if you’re trying to get on the 6:15 to Birmingham and it’s pulling out of the station then no, BUT, that’s not what we’re talking about here. In business people DO like moving trains! If you’re starting a film or media project, no one really wants to be the first person to jump on-board. No one wants to have the pressure of being the first to champion your project just in case (I’m sorry to say it) it’s crap. So many, many times good projects fail to get going because no one will get aboard the best train in the station.

So for Mi current project I’ve taken a different strategy – I decided to green light it myself! Yep that simple. I decided not to ask for anyone’s approval or backing, I put the proposal together, wrote the script (The Crooked House), started a website (The Haunted Kingdom) and finally began work on a background documentary AKA The Life and Death and Life of The Black Country.

So how is it going? Well funny you should ask – very well.

Mi company owns enough equipment to begin shooting and so far we have shot three ghost stories (for The Haunted Kingdom), two events for the documentary and we have a gaggle of interviewees coming down the pipeline in the next couple of weeks. Things are moving forward and some days I don’t know how, but momentum is gaining and the train is moving because it has to. And people are jumping aboard because, like the 6:15 to Birmingham, they feel they need to. I look forward to rewarding their faith with some quality entertainment.
